Born Sept. 16, 1924 in Minneapolis, MN. Joined USAAC in Chicago on May 13, 1943. Graduated as navigator and commissioned as second lieutenant, Class 44-6, San Marcos AAF, April 22, 1944. B-24 RTU at Biggs AAF.
Separated as captain in December 1946. Flew with Air Force Reserve while earning civil engineering degree from University of Minnesota. Recalled to active duty with SAC May 1, 1951; flew B-29s (9th Bomb Wing, Travis AFB), B-47s (376th Bomb Wing, Barksdale AFB), and B-52s (92nd and 4141st Bomb Wings). Earned MBA from George Washington University in 1964. Served with RC-130 and DC-130 Recon units in Japan and Vietnam (1964-1970); headquarters assignments in recon plans and comptroller. Retired as colonel Aug. 31, 1978. Married Shirley Sams on Sept. 4, 1948; four children, nine grandchildren.
