The Ship
Hellsadroppin' II flew with the 93rd's 329th Squadron, including an abortive run on the low-level Ploesti raid of August 1, 1943 -- piloted that day by Lieutenant Julian Harvey, she turned back shortly after leaving the Libyan coast with engine trouble. On January 8, 1944 she was transferred to the 448th Bomb Group, becoming that group's first formation assembly ship, variously known as Painted Virgin, You Cawn't Miss It, and Checker Board.
