“Fearless Fosdick”

Fearless Fosdick was the 93rd's Piper Cub liaison aircraft, and she found her way into a small piece of royal history in 1943. Lieutenant Walt Stewart, who had promised to lend a copy of Lloyd Douglas's novel The Robe to Princess Elizabeth after meeting her and Princess Margaret at a war-bond event, checked out Fosdick and flew it low over the grounds of Sandringham, the royal family's Norfolk retreat, to drop the wrapped book. Security personnel on the ground noted the little plane's markings, along with the exact time of the intrusion into royal airspace, and Stewart's personnel file grew by half an inch before the matter was closed - though an equerry at Buckingham Palace later asked for his mother's address so she might receive a letter from the Palace.
