§ Biography

Served with 93rd Bomb Group, 328th Sqdn., 8th Air Force in England as armorer from July 1944 to May 1945. Notable experience: stood shoulder to shoulder with Gen. Ted Timberlake loading parachute supply bundles in the ball turret position for the Holland drop during Operation Market Garden.

Before the War

Born Feb. 16, 1924 in Indianola, MS. Tried to enlist in February 1942 but didn't meet height/weight minimums; finally accepted October 1942 after consuming many bananas and much water. Active duty February 1943; basic at Miami Beach; University of Alabama CTD (April 1943) preparing for air cadets; cadet classification at San Antonio (September 1943); washed out for scarred lungs. Buckley Field, CO for Armament School; January to June 1944 at Buckingham Field, FL towing aerial targets for Gunnery School.

After the War

Discharged November 1945 at Biggs Field, TX. Married Sarah Cliett in 1962; three daughters, one grandson. Retired January 1992 after 46 years of cotton farming in Indianola, MS. Attended the 2nd Air Division 45th reunion in Norwich (1991) and a Midwest 2nd Air Division mini-reunion (Spring 1993).
