The man.
1st Lt. Walter W. McCartie served as pilot of the B-24J Liberator on the mission of 25 February 1944. His next of kin was his mother, Mrs. Eva McCartie, of Rural Route 1, Oskaloosa, Iowa.
According to statements made by Lt. Greenwood Gay from the hospital at Dahn, McCartie was believed to have been in the aircraft at the time of the crash and was presumed to have been killed in the wreckage. Local police investigations found no remains at the crash site initially.
McCartie's body was found by a lumberjack from Bundenthal on 6 March 1944 in the forest section "Kleine Litschbach", district Bundenthal. He was buried at the cemetery of Niederschlettenbach on 10 March 1944. His personal effects including watch, finger ring, money, and identification tag were transmitted to Dulag Luft Oberursel.
