Sgt. Daniel J. Varbese, ASN 12168556, was a waist gunner on the 7 January 1944 mission to Ludwigshafen. Fruth observed Varbese exit the aircraft through the bomb bay before him.
Varbese's official status was listed as MIA following the mission. No further information about his fate after the bail-out appears in Fruth's report.
