The man.
Stationed at Hardwick, Norwich with 93rd Bomb Group, 330th Sqdn. as flight engineer. Flew 35 missions (Oct. 2, 1944 – March 30, 1945). Traveled to England on the Ile de France (no convoy — Bing Crosby was aboard and entertained troops). Returned home on convoy; was halfway back to the States when the war in Europe ended. A German submarine surrendered to the convoy before they reached the U.S.

Born March 23, 1922 in Wadesboro, NC. Enlisted in USAAF in May 1943. Basic training at Ft. Bragg, NC; Aircraft Mechanic School at Keesler Field, MS; Gunnery School at Harlingen, TX. Flight training with crew at Tonopah, NV.
Discharged in May 1945 as tech. sergeant — first in Anson County, NC to be discharged on points. Received Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters and EFG Ribbon with Battle Stars. Married, two children. Retired in 1986 after 34 years at James River-Dixie Corp., Darlington, SC.
