The man.
Served as left waist gunner and armorer on B-24 Liberator, 328th Bomb Sqdn., 93rd Bomb Group, Hardwick, England, from October 1944. Flew his last mission April 8, 1945. Roughest targets included Hamburg, Munster, and Magdeburg synthetic oil plants — nine minutes of flak on each Berlin mission. Memorable experience: an ME-262 barreled through their formation without firing a shot.

From Fort Wayne, IN; about 19 years old during WWII service.
After the war: apprenticeship as plumber/steamfitter; industrial pipefitter for 14 years; managerial job at International Harvester (retired as maintenance general foreman). Joined Indiana Air National Guard; served 21 months in Korean War as Section Head, Armament Section, Fighter Interceptor Squadron. Received six Air Medals, three Battle Stars on the ETO Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation with one cluster. Married, seven children, 18 grandchildren. Retired; summers on lake in Northern Indiana, winters in Siesta Key, Sarasota, FL.
