Enlisted August 1942 in the USAF as gunner/aerial engineer. Initially assigned to the 44th Bomb Group, 506th Sqdn., then transferred to the 93rd Bomb Group, 329th Sqdn. Stationed at Biloxi, MS; Pocatello, Boise, ID; Shipdham E.; Hardwich, England.
Participated in 28 missions over Germany and occupied France while stationed in England. He flew with the R.A. Ponker crew on a B-24. On their third mission over Munster, Germany on Nov. 3, 1943, they were attacked by enemy fighters, seven crew were injured, crash landed back on base and spent 10 days in hospital.
Discharged September 1945 with the rank of staff sergeant. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, European Theater and American Theater Medal.
