John P. Bowman.

The man.

§ Biography

Captain John P. Bowman (serial O-428650) served aboard B-24D 41-24298, 409th Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group. He was reported missing in action on 13 November 1943 during the Bremen mission.

Bowman's case prompted Army Air Forces administrative correspondence beginning in early February 1944, when Headquarters AAF requested that a Missing Air Crew Report be filed for him. The 9th Air Force initially replied that the 93rd Bomb Group was not under its command on the date in question; the 8th Air Force subsequently confirmed his status and identified the aircraft. The MACR was forwarded to the Commanding General, Army Air Forces, by letter dated 21 February 1944.

A separate German casualty report for the Isle of Amrum (MACR-2190) documented crew members recovered on the island following the mission. Bowman's body was not among those recovered and documented in the Amrum German report. His remains were subsequently recovered on Amrum, confirming his death in action. His status beyond the 13 November 1943 mission is not further specified in the available records.
