Sgt. John A. Schmidt served as right waist gunner of B-24H 42-51078. He was born 21 September 1922 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was listed as missing in action on the original MACR, with his status later updated to returned to duty.

A German hospital record from Reserve-Lazarett V Hamburg dated 19 January 1945 confirms he was admitted on 17 January 1945 with burns and contusions.
