§ Biography

1st Lt. James M. Powell was lead pilot of B-24L 44-49573, 329th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group, on the 23 March 1945 mission to Munster, Germany. He was described in the 329th Squadron history as "one of the most promising of the lead crews."

The aircraft was destroyed by direct antiaircraft fire immediately after bombs away over Munster. No parachutes were observed by the deputy lead crew. Survivor 2nd Lt. Diez confirmed finding Powell's body on the ground after the crash.
