Edward J. Timberlake.

Colonel Edward J. "Ted" Timberlake was the commanding officer of the 93rd Bombardment Group during its early combat tours in England and North Africa in 1942-43. The group's enduring nickname, "Ted's Traveling Circus," is named for him, reflecting both his leadership and the unit's frequent moves between bases and theaters.

Timberlake led elements of the group on the Lille mission of October 9, 1942, the 93rd's first combat operation, flying in Teggie Ann. He later commanded the 93rd's contribution to the low-level raid on the Ploesti oil refineries (Operation Tidal Wave) on August 1, 1943, one of the most costly missions of the air war, in which fellow 93rd officers Addison Baker and John Jerstad were both killed and later awarded the Medal of Honor.

Timberlake died on September 3, 1990, at Hilton Head, South Carolina, and is buried with his wife Marge at Six Oaks Memorial Park.
