Donald H. Crawford.

Sgt. Donald H. Crawford (ASN 32446778), left waist gunner on the crew, bailed out over Nijkerk, Holland at approximately 1330 hours on 30 January 1944. He hid in a straw stack for one day before receiving aid from Dutch civilians.

Crawford stayed on a farm at Nijkerk until 29 February 1944, then moved to Zeist, Holland, where he stayed with a Mr. Falmer until 11 March. He then moved to Roermond until 21 April, when he crossed into Belgium at Eisden with a guide named E. Syded.

In Belgium, Crawford spent six weeks in Hande assisting the White Army (Belgian resistance) in sabotage operations. He helped blow up a railroad bridge, cut telephone wires, and gathered arms dropped by British aircraft. From 15 June he moved to Oteppe, Province de Liege, where he stayed with Edmond Wanzand for approximately two and a half months and continued resistance work.

When American forces entered Belgium, Crawford fought alongside the White Army against the Germans. He was interrogated by I.S.9 (WEA) on 11 September 1944 and returned to the UK on 12 September 1944. His evasion was graded No. 5. In civilian life he had worked as assistant manager of a Kresge store. He had completed 5 missions before being shot down.
