The man.
Assigned as engineer on James Dourghetty's crew with 93rd Bomb Group. Went overseas November 1943; returned October 1944. Most memorable mission was Aug. 8, 1944 — sent to mark a target for B-17s near Coen, France in thick fog; received over 81 hits on the plane, the pilot performing evasive action like Beightol had never seen. After four missions, the crew was assigned as a lead crew and led other groups on missions.

Born Sept. 2, 1921 in Erie, PA. Joined USAAC Aug. 8, 1942. Air Mechanics School at Keesler Field; Consolidated Air School, San Diego (B-24s); Gunnery School at Harlingen, TX; phase training at Boise and Pocatello, ID.
Discharged Sept. 18, 1945 as tech sergeant. Received Distinguished Flying Cross, four Air Medals, and Unit Citation. Retired; widower with four sons.
