The man.
Carroll Berner flew a B-24 to England via Labrador and Iceland and was assigned to the 328th Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group. His first mission was September 10, 1944, followed the next day by a mission to Magdeburg. He flew a total of 35 missions, including a supply drop at Nijmegen where 18 planes departed and only two returned unharmed.
He received five Air Medals for his service.

Carroll Berner was born on a farm near Lidgerwood, ND in December 1919. His primary education was in a one-room prairie school. He entered the Army Air Corps in February 1943 and graduated from pilot training at Lubbock, TX on December 5, 1943. He completed B-24 transition training at Liberal, KS.
Berner married Delta Knight in February 1946 and had two sons, Geoffry and Steven. He earned an engineering degree at USC and worked in flight test and management at Teledyne Ryan in San Diego for 20 years. In June 1975 he married June Everett. He retired from the Reserves in November 1979 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was a semi-retired real estate broker.
