The man.
Carl C. Barthel entered the USAAC on August 7, 1941 and served with the 93rd Bomb Group, 329th Bomb Squadron, and HQ 2nd Air Division. He was stationed at Alconbury, Bungay, Hardwick, Bengasi, and Tunis.
Among his most memorable experiences were the low-level raid on Ploesti, the Rome mission, and D-Day. He retired on August 31, 1970 with the rank of colonel.

Carl C. Barthel was born March 13, 1917 in Arbutus, MD. He entered the service on August 7, 1941, joining the USAAC.
After WWII, Barthel remained in the Air Force with the Air Training Command, serving at Keesler AFB, Scott AFB, James Connally AFB, and Mather AFB. He was present at the founding of the Air Force Academy. He also served with the European Communications Area at Ramstein and Wiesbaden, Germany, and at Scott AFB. He retired on August 31, 1970 with the rank of colonel, relocating to Upperco, MD. He received the Legion of Merit with 20 Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star Medal, Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Croix de Guerre, and AFLSA with 11 Oak Leaf Clusters. He married Joan L. Thomas at Kettringham Hall in 1944 (deceased) and later married Helene Zborowski in 1982. He had two children by his first marriage.
