The man.
Pilot of B-24 Liberator serial 41-24122, 409th Bombardment Squadron, 93rd Bombardment Group, Hardwick Airdrome, Norfolk, England. Reported missing in action on 16 April 1943 over the English Channel.
An eyewitness account by Captain Lake noted that after bombing Brest, France, aircraft 41-24122 with Captain Fleenor as pilot was seen with its left rudder shot off and No. 2 engine in flames. A British Spitfire reported the aircraft ditched at approximately 49 deg 00'N, 04 deg 00'W.
Fleenor and his crew were never reported as POWs, internees, or escapees. A Finding of Death under Section 5, Public Law 490 showed presumed date of death as 17 April 1944. An official Report of Death was subsequently issued on 7 April 1949 under Section 9 of the Missing Persons Act, declaring him killed in action on 16 April 1943.
