Captain Alex Simpson piloted Big Eagle on the 93rd Bombardment Group's first combat mission, the October 9, 1942 raid on Lille. His aircraft was shot down during the mission, the group's first combat loss, and Simpson was taken prisoner, later held at Stalag Luft III.
