Queenie

Radio Call
Q · Queen
The Ship

Piloted by Major (later Colonel) George Brown, Queenie flew in column alongside Addison Baker's Hell's Wench as the Circus formation turned for Ploesti on August 1, 1943. Navigator Carl Barthel, aboard Queenie, watched Hell's Wench burning for several minutes as it held course for the refinery stacks rather than putting down in open fields below. After Baker was lost, Brown took command of the surviving formation, and Queenie - with Raymond Walker at the controls - carried the deputy Circus leader home from the mission.

As "Q for Queenie," the aircraft crash-landed back at base following the December 11, 1943 mission to Emden, piloted by Lieutenant Richard Sundstrom. No one aboard was injured.
