The Ship

K for King, an Eight Balls (44th Bomb Group) Liberator, lost its electrical system during the Ploesti withdrawal, leaving every instrument dead. Navigator Leroy E. Zaruba talked pilot Robert E. Miller and command pilot Dexter L. Hodge onto the Sicilian beachhead without the benefit of an altimeter, and the crew put the aircraft down safely. Though not a Circus-owned aircraft, K for King's landing took place amid the same chaotic scattering of bombers across Sicily and Malta that many 93rd crews experienced that day.
