“Number 840-X”

Number 840-X was the aircraft of pilot William Meehan, lost during Operation Tidal Wave, the August 1, 1943, low-level strike against the Ploesti oil refineries. Sergeant Lawrence A. Yates was the crew's sole survivor; he was captured and, along with other Tidal Wave prisoners, was eventually held by the Romanians at a mountain camp in Timisul de Jos, in the Transylvanian Alps.
