The Ship
Captain Robert Hoover flew Minerva on the November 7, 1942 mission against the submarine pens at Brest, one of the heaviest flak days Americans had yet encountered over the port. Radio operator Charles Lockwood fainted from lack of oxygen at altitude but recovered enough to work his way to wounded waist gunner Robert Kaluzsa and see to him; Hoover later praised Lockwood's conduct. Sergeant John Carney suffered a flesh wound to the arm during the same mission. Minerva's crew reported direct hits on the sub pens and watched other 93rd aircraft register additional strikes on the target.
Minerva was later transferred to the 392nd Bomb Group, where she became that group's first formation assembly ship.
