“Journal Square Express”

Journal-Express carried bombardier Richard C. Stahl on the April 25, 1945 raid against the Salzburg marshalling yards, the Eighth Air Force's last bombing mission of the war. Stahl had studied the battle order before the mission and timed the return flights, and after touchdown he lingered on the flight deck reading a copy of Yank rather than deplane right away, a delay that let him claim, only half in jest, the distinction of being the last man off an Eighth Air Force heavy bomber combat sortie.
