Piloted by Captain Alexander Simpson, Big Eagle took direct hits while inbound near Dunkirk on October 9, 1942, the 93rd Bomb Group's first combat mission, and went down, the Group's first combat loss. Several of the crew were killed and several taken prisoner. Sergeant Arthur B. Cox evaded capture and made his way across France to neutral Spain.
