Howard R. Cleveland

In July 1944 he flew a new B-24 by the northern route to Valley, Wales; then on to the 330th Bomb Sqdn., 93rd Bomb Group at Hardwick. He flew the first of 35 missions over Germany on Sept. 10, 1944 and the last on Feb. 25, 1945. He remembers well the tremendous effort of Dec. 24 and 25, 1944 when they flew in support of the troops in the Battle of the Bulge.
Returned on March 30, 1945 via C-54 from Prestwick, Scotland. After R&R at Atlantic City he was sent to Ellington Field, TX for refresher and assignment to B-29s in the Pacific. It never happened. Japan surrendered in August 1945 and he was discharged in October 1945.
Cleveland was recalled in October 1949 for the Korean War and spent the next three and a half years training navigators at Ellington Field, TX. He decided to stay with the USAF and spent the rest of his military career as a navigator and management engineer.
Retired in 1973.

Howard Cleveland was born on July 18, 1918 in Vestal, NY. Enlisted in the USAAF Cadet Program in November 1942. Was commissioned a navigator at Selman Field, LA and joined the Bill MacFarland crew at Peterson Field, CO and Mt. Home, ID for B-24 OTU.
