George Burford
S/Sgt. George S. Burford served as spare waist gunner (SWG) aboard B-24J 42-100416 'Baggy Maggy' on the 18 September 1944 supply mission near Arnhem. Reported missing in action after the aircraft was shot down; status remained MIA on the original MACR.
Per pilot Larry Hewin's account, Burford took a bullet in the calf during the ground-fire attack that crippled the aircraft. Donald Dukeman's memoir lists him among the regular Hewin crew as 'Stuart Burford' -- almost certainly the same man as the DB's George S. Burford, a discrepancy most likely owed to a 50-plus-year-old memory rather than a different person.
