Assigned to 8th Air Force on July 16, 1943, further assigned to 93rd Bomb Group(H), 328th Bomb Sqdn. Met the group in North Africa, flew several missions from there.
Returned to England in September 1943 and completed 26 missions. Returned to the States in June 1944 and taught gunnery at Fort Myers, FL. Discharged Oct. 24, 1945, joined the Baltimore City Fire Department on March 26, 1947 and went into Army Reserves. Received direct commission as second lieutenant in the USAF on June 21, 1949 as crash/rescue officer.
Recalled to active duty for Korean War, ordered to Japan on Nov. 9, 1951. Assigned as crash/rescue officer to Johnson Air Base, Tokyo, Japan on Jan. 7, 1952. Returned to States and released from active duty on Jan. 24, 1953. Returned to Fire Department and remained in Air Force Reserve until June 7, 1984, retiring with rank of captain.
Decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal, European Theater Medal with four stars, American Theater Medal, Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with one star, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with one Hour Glass Device, Air Force Longevity Service Medal with nine Oak Leaf Clusters, United Nations Medal and Battle for Britain Medal (British).

Charles Cornell was born in Baltimore, MD on June 7, 1924 and enlisted in the Army Sept. 23, 1942. Went to Aerial Gunnery School at Tyndall Field, FL and graduated Dec. 1, 1942. Went to Salt Lake City, UT and attended Radio-Operator School, graduated as radio operator/gunner on Feb. 1, 1943 with the rank of staff sergeant.
