Arthur W. Carpenter

Was commissioned as a second lieutenant and had crew training in Charleston, VA. He was assigned to the 93rd Bomb Group in England, flew 31 missions, 14 as lead bombardier and squadron bombardier including Air Force lead.
Carpenter received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with five clusters.
His memorable experience was a mission when they fought off an attack of three ME-109s after losing an engine and falling behind. They shot one down and returned with the group. In Korea he flew 15 missions and received one Air Medal.
Retired on Dec. 18, 1982 with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Arthur W. Carpenter Jr. enlisted in the USAAF on Oct. 28, 1942. His basic training was at Miami Beach, FL. He took Airplane Mechanics at Amarillo, TX and preflight at San Antonio, TX. Gunnery School at Harlingen; Advanced Bombardiering at Midland (44-1).
