During the low-level Ploesti strike of August 1, 1943, Pudgy, piloted by Milton Telster, passed near a German flak battery that opened fire as the formation went by. A burst sheared off the tail, and the bomber crashed and burned in a cornfield near the battery that hit it. Telster and four crewmen escaped the wreck and were taken prisoner.
