“Prince Charming”

Shot Down

Flown by James A. Gunn during the August 1, 1943 withdrawal from Ploesti, Prince Charming was one of a small group of Liberators crossing Bulgaria when Bulgarian fighters intercepted them. As The Witch moved in to defend Prince Charming, Lieutenant Peter Bochev's fighter caught Gunn's aircraft, and it rolled over and fell in flames. Tail-gunner Stanley Horine, badly burned, was the only man aboard to survive. Bulgarian forces held him along with the surviving crew of The Witch in a Sofia jail.
