On April 7, 1945, during a bombing run on a concealed munitions works near Luneberg, an out-of-control FW-190 tore away nearly a third of J for Johnny's left wing after its pilot ejected moments before the collision. Lieutenant Gunther Christensen, a Kansas City native, held the ship steady long enough to release his bombs, only to be jumped moments later by an Me-262 whose cannon fire wrecked the nose turret and forced him to shut down the No. 3 engine. Flying on three engines with a crippled wing, Christensen and his crew nursed the battered Liberator back to Hardwick without loss of life - by the unit's own reckoning, the closest the 20th Wing came to losing a crew that day.
