“Old Hickory”
On April 8, 1944, near Zwolle, Pilot Joseph A. Buland, Jr. and his crew came under fire from a German Fw 190A-8 piloted by Lieutenant Karl-Heinz Willius of JG 26/2. Hit by cannon fire, the aircraft went down and crashed at Schokland in Holland. Two of the crew died in the crash. The remaining seven managed to bail out, parachuting into enemy territory where they were quickly captured. They would spend the rest of the war as prisoners of war. The loss was documented in military records as MACR 3764.
