McCullough’s 505-E took off at 08:30, released on the PFF lead at 12:00 from 23,200 feet on a heading of 65° magnetic, and landed at Hardwick at 14:30. The crew carried twelve 500-pound G.P. bombs and a camera; all bombs went away. Results were not observed. They reported no enemy fighters. Meagre barrage flak, listed inactive, was noted at 12:04 just as they crossed the Rhine (50°10′ N, 07°30′ E) at 22,200 feet. On the way in they saw a large new trail at about 50° to the sky, 25 miles to the left (about 10 o’clock), at 11:15, southeast of Ghent.
