Wallace D. Milligan.

The Man Behind the Name

§ Biography

Sgt. Wallace D. Milligan served as radio operator on the 1 August 1943 Ploesti mission with the 93rd Bomb Group, 330th Bomb Squadron.

Milligan was killed by enemy fighter action before the aircraft crashed, making him the only crew member whose death was caused directly by enemy fire rather than the crash itself. Co-pilot Bassett confirmed this in both the crew questionnaire and the casualty questionnaire. Lt. Beaumont's report likewise notes that Milligan was killed by fighters during the engagement.
