§ Biography
S/Sgt. Stephen J. "Epp" Eppolito served as tail gunner aboard "Big Eagle," a B-24 in the 330th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group, flown by Capt. Alexander Simpson. Fellow crewman Michael L. Reardon's diary describes him as a close friend and hut-mate at Hardwick, recalling an outing the two took together to Cambridge in the weeks before the crew's first mission. On October 9, 1942, the 93rd Bomb Group flew its first combat mission, targeting Lille, France. Near Dunkirk, Big Eagle was hit and went down, the group's first combat loss; Eppolito was killed.
