The Man Behind the Name

Assigned to 330th Bomb Sqdn., 93rd Bomb Group (H). Stationed at Hardwick, England. Completed 28 bombing missions over Europe as engineer/gunner. Memorable experiences: crashing on takeoff with delay bombs at Hardwick (all survived); and another mission where flak damage forced them to ditch everything and land on a grass fighter field in southern England with only fuel fumes remaining. In 1944 became crew chief on B-24-11 (later named Top Hat), which he crewed for 88 missions without an abort. After four additional missions, the aircraft was transferred to 329th Sqdn. and came back to the 328th, eventually completing 123 missions.

Born Nov. 29, 1922 in Chestnut Hill, PA. Enlisted March 18, 1941 in USAAC. Training at McDill Field, Tampa, FL; Barksdale Field, LA; Ft. Myers, FL.
Discharged Aug. 1, 1945 as staff sergeant. Received Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, American Defense Service Medal, EAME Service Medal with six Bronze Stars, Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal. Returned to Air Force during Korean War; discharged second time Aug. 16, 1965 as master sergeant (USAF Ret.). Married Ruth; son Ralph Jr., daughter-in-law Debbie, grandchildren Aaron M. and Sasha M.
