The Man Behind the Name
Served with 93rd Bomb Group, 409th Sqdn. at Hardwick, England. Flew two combat tours from June 30, 1943 to Oct. 4, 1944. Became lead navigator on the second tour. Participated in action at Sicily, Air Offensive Europe, Normandy, Northern France, and Naples/Foggia. Notable mission: Berlin on March 22, 1944. Most trying mission was to Oiso, Normandy on Nov. 16, 1943, nearly froze to death due to lack of heated flight suits.

Born June 12, 1919 in Cadott, WI. Entered regular Army Oct. 31, 1939; served with 3rd Infantry Regiment. Stationed at Ft. Snelling, MN. Transferred to Army Air Forces; Kelly Field (March 1942); AFTD Coleman, TX (April 1942); Ellington Field, TX (June 1942); AAFNS Hondo, TX (October 1942 to October 1943).
Suffered from tuberculosis during combat. After two years in hospital, retired from service at Fitzsimmons Hospital on Aug. 11, 1947 with the rank of captain. Received the Distinguished Flying Cross. Married Oct. 31, 1944 to his high school sweetheart; seven children (two deceased). Retired; does small plumbing repairs and enjoys trout fishing.
