The Man Behind the Name
1st Lt. Nathaniel Whitman (NMI) served as pilot of B-24J 42-50606 on the 12 October 1944 mission to Osnabruck.
Whitman was killed when the aircraft was shot down by anti-aircraft fire over Osnabruck. German records from Airbase Headquarters Achmer confirm he was initially interred at the Prisoner of War Cemetery, Achmer, Row 2, Grave 114. He was later reinterred at the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Section I, Row 7, Grave 15.
