The Man Behind the Name
T/Sgt. Maurice J. Peterson served as top turret gunner (engineer) on the 1 August 1943 Ploesti mission. When the aircraft crashed, Peterson was trapped in the burning wreckage.
Adams went back to the aircraft and pulled Peterson out of the wreckage. Peterson died later from his wounds and was reported killed in action.
