The Man Behind the Name
S/Sgt. Marion G. Szars served as waist gunner on the Ploesti mission of 1 August 1943, flying with the 330th Squadron of the 93rd Bomb Group. He was killed in action during or as a result of the crash landing near Ploesti.
Bombardier Norman C. Adams, who survived the mission and filed the E&E report, confirmed that Szars did not survive. Of the ten crew members aboard, Szars was among four who died as a result of the Ploesti mission.
