§ Biography

1Lt. Leo F. Baumann was born in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, and grew up in Peoria, Illinois, graduating from Peoria High School in 1939. He attended Bradley College for two years and worked at Caterpillar before studying at Purdue University.

He enlisted on 21 July 1942 in Peoria and trained at George Army Air Field, Lawrenceville, Illinois, becoming a pilot with the 409th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group (Heavy). He was killed in action piloting his B-24 over Germany on 5 November 1944.
