§ Biography
Sgt. James Detoris, of Brooklyn, New York, served as tunnel gunner aboard "Big Eagle," a B-24 in the 330th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group, flown by Capt. Alexander Simpson - a manually-aimed belly gun position used on early B-24Ds before ball turrets became standard. On October 9, 1942, the 93rd Bomb Group flew its first combat mission, targeting Lille, France. Near Dunkirk, Big Eagle was hit and went down, the group's first combat loss. A contemporaneous report from July 1943 listed Detoris as missing in action; he was later confirmed killed, and is buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery.
