The Man Behind the Name
T/Sgt. Jack R. McCallen served as radio operator/gunner aboard B-24J 'Bar Fly' (42-100248), 409th Bomb Squadron. He enlisted 2 September 1942 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and was stationed at Hardwick Air Field, England, with the Eighth Air Force.
McCallen was killed in action on 1 April 1944 when his B-24 was struck by flak while returning from a bombing run over Pforzheim, Germany, and crashed near Reims, France. He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
