§ Biography

Assigned to 93rd Bomb Group, 409th Sqdn. in England. Flew 24 missions over Germany. On first mission, flew co-pilot with experienced pilot Frank Eiben to Magdeburg, Germany — Eiben handed over controls to Hallgarth at the bomb run, then took extra precautions as it was one of his last missions. Awarded the Air Medal.

Before the War

Born June 15, 1921. Joined the Army Air Force and trained as a B-24 pilot.

After the War

Returned home after Germany surrendered. Took reserve training and retired in 1981 as a lieutenant colonel. Farming and apple orchard in retirement. Married Hermina Helmich; has two sons, one daughter, and five grandchildren.
