The Man Behind the Name
George Robert Schluter was born January 20, 1920, in Madison, Wisconsin, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Schluter of 417 Dean Ave. He entered the Army Air Forces on November 7, 1941, and earned his pilot's wings on January 6, 1944, at Lawrenceville, Illinois.
He went overseas on June 18, 1944, and was assigned to the 329th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force, stationed in England. On January 28, 1945, he was reported missing over Germany; he was killed that same day near Dortmund at age 25. He is buried in Lemay Township, St. Louis County, Missouri. His decorations include the Purple Heart, the World War II Victory Medal, and a Gold Star.
