The Man Behind the Name
Capt. Gene Leroy Maddocks (O-818902) served as pilot of a B-24 with the 329th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group, 8th USAAF. Born 13 September 1924, he had completed 25 missions and accumulated 28 months of service by the time of his E&E interrogation. In peacetime he worked in an aircraft factory in Los Angeles, California.
On 24 February 1944, his aircraft departed Hardwick at 0800 hours and went down near Urk, Holland at approximately 1500 hours. Maddocks parachuted to safety on the Polder, leaving his parachute, harness, and Mae West at the landing site. He retained only his dog tags as identification.
Maddocks evaded capture in Holland for over a year. On 25 February 1945, a Mr. Peter Blukhuis transported him by boat from near Urk to Bunschoten, providing food and lodging for two days. He was then sheltered by Mr. and Mrs. T. Kruize at Vliegweg 3B, Blaricum, Holland, from 27 February 1945 until liberation on 9 May 1945. A Mrs. T. van Krimpen also provided comforts and food during this period.
Maddocks was interrogated by I.S.9 (WEA) on 10 May 1945, at which point he signed a security certificate. He spoke poor Spanish but no French. His E&E report was assigned number IS9WEA/1/411/3049.
