The Man Behind the Name
Transferred from 445th Bomb Group to 93rd Bomb Group, 329th Sqdn. on Feb. 17, 1944. Flew 30 missions total -- first with the 93rd was March 13, 1944 (7th mission overall); D-Day was his 19th mission; final mission was June 20, 1944, St. Martin, France (a rocket site), where the B-24 took 27 holes and had an engine fire that fortunately blew out. Crew was ready to jump before the fire extinguished itself.

Born March 2, 1923 in New Castle, PA. Entered USAAC Dec. 4, 1942 at Erie, PA. After basic training, Armorer and Gunnery School, assigned to Ralph Schneck's lead crew with 445th Bomb Group, 702nd Sqdn. as tail gunner. Trained at Watertown, SD; flew to Tibenham, England by southern route on Sin Ship (tail #427601).
Discharged Oct. 20, 1945 with rank of staff sergeant. Received four Air Medals and Distinguished Flying Cross. Married Louise Barnhouse Nov. 10, 1947; four sons, one daughter, eight grandchildren. Worked as machinist and tool maker; now retired.
