The Man Behind the Name
2nd Lt. Chester D. Makinster was the pilot of B-24H 42-110033, 330th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group. His name appears variously as 'Wakilaker' and 'Maklister' in the two MACR copies due to OCR errors; confirmed as 'Makinster' in the eyewitness statement and 3rd Indorsement. Serial number O-860448 confirmed from MACR 15202.
Killed in action 29 March 1944 in a mid-air collision with A/C 41-28590 (pilot Lt. Robert L. McPetrich) during formation assembly over Malesworth Station. No parachutes were observed by eyewitnesses. The sole survivor was S/Sgt. Kenneth L. Gurney, who bailed out.
