The Man Behind the Name

Originally relegated to be in the ground forces because of color blindness, but after attending Radio School at Scott Field, IL, was given a basic color test and then sent to Laredo, TX for Gunnery School.
After flight crew training at Davis-Monthan and Alamogordo Air bases, he picked up new B-24 at Lincoln, NE and flew the southern route to England. Assigned to the 93rd Bomb Group, 409th Sqdn. at Hardwick. Completed 31 missions including March 6, 1944 raid on Berlin and 30th mission on D-day. Received European Campaign Ribbon with three stars, four Air Medals, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Rotated back to the States in September of 1944 and became an instructor at Sioux Falls Radio School. Discharged immediately after V-J Day and returned to the farm in Oberlin.

Born Sept. 9, 1924 in Oberlin, OH and raised there on a farm. Enlisted in the USAAC on Dec. 3, 1942.
Retired in 1987. He is married with three children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
